Southampton Town Historic Cemeteries: Cemetery Conditions Survey

In 2006 an expert project team led by Co-Directors Frank Matero and Judy Peters from the University of Pennsylvania were contracted by the Town of Southampton, New York to produce a conditions survey of the ten town-owned cemeteries.  Included in this survey was a photograph of each gravestone, the inscription and exact location of each stone.  A total of 1,178 individual and 17 group plots were surveyed; see below. Educational seminars were also provided for the general public to demonstrate the procedures for treating and preserving the historic headstones.

In order to make the results of this survey more accessible to the public, the data from this survey was formatted and placed on this Town-sponsored website. The records are now searchable by name, date of death or inscription. Each record may be compared to the other surveys of grave sites that were conducted by the DAR and the Town of Southampton's Date of death records. As new information is found about a particular gravestone, it is added as a link into the follwing list.
